A dental emergency calls for immediate treatment to save an at-risk tooth or to provide relief from pain due to a dental issue. Certain problems that need emergency dental care may begin as minor issues such as a cavity, but they develop into something severe if untreated. The sooner you contact us, the better!

Types of Emergencies

Deciding if treating a toothache can wait for your next regular appointment or if it requires emergency care can be challenging – some of the signs of a dental emergency are:

Severe Toothache
This is often a sure sign of an impending emergency situation. Please don’t wait to call us if you’re experiencing a toothache, especially if it starts on a day that our office is actually open. An infection may be causing the pain or there may be other issues that we can help you figure out. We can promptly diagnose the cause of the pain and implement the appropriate treatment.

Aching or Bleeding Gums
This may indicate periodontitis, which is an advanced stage of gum disease. It can cause sensitive gums prone to bleeding when flossing or brushing. Gum disease can put bone and gum tissue vulnerable to damage, which can make the teeth loose and even cause them to fall out. This is especially true if it has been longer than 6 months since you have seen a dentist.

Trauma
If you get hit in the mouth or suffer from a fall and your teeth are injured, you may have a dental emergency. A loose tooth may need to be stabilized immediately. If your tooth falls out completely, it may be able to be reinserted if done promptly enough. Please call us immediately if you have a traumatic dental injury.

Severely Chipped Front Teeth Without Pain
Having a chipped front tooth that doesn’t hurt may be unsightly and may feel like an emergency to you, especially if you have something coming up where people are going to see your teeth. We will do our best to get you in to take care of your front tooth as soon as possible.

For assistance with these and other dental emergencies call Nord Dental at 309-663-9421.
